Annotating Spaces Like Never Before: Introducing field tags and enhanced tag management
Digital documentation is reshaping the way we manage our physical environments. Matterport is revolutionizing this process with powerful new tagging features that make annotating digital twins of buildings, machines, and even entire campuses more seamless and efficient. These tools enable faster updates, better communication, and greater organization. Whether you're developing, operating, or managing properties, our latest innovations ensure your digital records are clearer, more detailed, and easier to keep up-to-date over time.
The Power of Real-Time Annotation

Annotations—or “Tags” in the Matterport ecosystem—have always been a cornerstone of enhancing digital twins. They allow users to embed critical details, from maintenance notes to design intentions, directly within a true-to-life 3D model. Now, we’re taking annotation to a whole new level with Field Tags to enable tagging while scanning. No more waiting until after the scan is complete. No more waiting for Wi-Fi—now customers on a Professional subscription or higher can add tags right as you capture the space, whether you're online or off, ensuring that each detail is safely and conveniently logged in the moment. This means real-time documentation, immediate collaboration, and a workflow that keeps up with the speed of your project.
Sometimes you need to have more detail or context than what a viewer can see in the final 3D space you are scanning. Field Tags can include helpful additional content such as a close-up picture taken while on site and easily attached to the tag at this location. The person completing the scan can also utilize conveniences like voice-to-text and pasting web links.
Although most use cases are covered, users currently cannot assign Field Tags to specific Views or Data Layers during scanning. However, this can be easily done afterward in Edit mode once the space has been processed.

Seamless Tag Transfer Between Models
Tracking project milestones in property development and management is often slowed down by the need to manually re-create annotations for each model—a time-consuming process. With enhanced tag management, we’re eliminating that redundancy. Now, your carefully placed annotations can move fluidly between digital twins, maintaining consistency and saving time. Effortlessly manage documentation revisions and additions, bulk add or edit tags, and refine your annotations—all while keeping a seamless record of changes over time.
With our new tag transfer capabilities, customers on a Professional subscription or higher can build a log of tagged data in layers over time, all viewable in your most up-to-date digital twin via export and import from model to model.
Example: Tag items like AEDs, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits, and when you rescan the area, simply export the tags and import them into the updated space. Similarly, in-wall assets tagged during construction can be imported into the final handover digital twin once the project is complete. Imported tags are automatically positioned correctly, as the 3D mesh is usually consistent across models. If the 3D mesh differs significantly, you can easily adjust a tag’s location by dragging it to the correct spot.
Easily create and update tag details at scale with bulk upload for flexible maintenance of your documentation repository. Think of this as a step towards a Find+Replace functionality.
Example: If you need to update the naming convention of tagged assets, avoid making manual edits one by one. Instead, export the tag data as a CSV, update the names or details, and re-upload the file to apply the changes in bulk.
Templatize and accelerate documentation across systems and locations by uploading or exporting known lists of tags.
Example: If you have a list of known assets or processes to document in your new digital twin, simply upload the list of tags to be applied to newly captured locations and drag them to their appropriate places within the digital twin. Alternatively, if your digital twin already contains extensive annotations and you want to repurpose that data, you can easily export it for use in other applications.

Bringing It All Together: Merging Spaces with Annotations Intact
Large properties, renovations, and multi-phase projects often require scanning in phases or sections before bringing everything together into one unified model, if it's even stitched together at all. With our Merge feature, not only can you combine separate scans into a single, cohesive digital twin, but soon your existing annotations come along for the ride. This means that every tag, link, and embedded detail remains intact, creating a seamless and continuous record over time.
Efficiency Meets Innovation
Matterport makes 3D documentation as seamless as managing any other digital document. Annotations can be captured in real-time, transferred easily between models over time, and preserved through merged digital twins for all time. This ensures that our brick-and-mortar world is just as easy to document digitally as anything else. No more duplication of work, no more lost details—just a streamlined, intelligent approach to managing spaces, processes, assets, and communication.
Matterport is making life easier for the people who rely on it. With these powerful new capabilities, Matterport is setting a new standard for how spaces are documented, shared, and understood—saving you time and ensuring that your records remain complete and valuable at every stage of a property’s lifecycle.
